School Tours Gone By…

Head Honcho Bruce Guettich talks about school tours and performances:

Outfitted with survival gear over the top of our touring team
warm-up suits, Peter Shunny and I were transported by bush plane over
hundreds of miles across the frozen Alaskan tundra from school to school.
We would land on a dirt runway, be picked up and put in the back of a 20
year old pickup truck, paraded through a village of a few hundred people living at a subsistence level, and then dropped at the door of a school
awaiting our performance and clinics. It’s hard to imagine a community
where no roads lead to the outside world.   The only way in or out would be
by plane or in some cases only a river or the ocean could take you out.
What an amazing state with amazing people.   Truly the land of extremes.

If you’re like me, going back to school after a summer break was half
torture, half excitement.   The torture was usually centered on the
realization that my time would now be seriously compromised by homework
and attending class.   The excitement was always about seeing my classmates
again and reconnecting our friendships.

After I graduated, and moved into my profession with footbag, I found my
way back into schools as a performer and teacher of the sport.   I’ve had
some unforgettable experiences with a host of wonderful touring partners.
I’ve performed at schools in Japan, Australia, Germany, Canada and in
almost every state in the US, but I’d have to say that the highlight of my
school touring career was that 10-day tour to the interior of Alaska in the middle of winter.

For more than twenty years, the back-to-school time signaled World
Footbag’s start to another footbag touring season for our teams.   Vehicle
preparation, scheduling, training, outfitting and calming the nerves of
rookie touring teams consumed our days in late August and early September
before sending our guys off on their footbag crusades across the country.
Throughout the ’80’s and ’90’s our school performances and physical
education classes gave footbag and this business life.   Although we’re not
promoting in the schools at this level anymore, the memories always seem
to heat up a little when the leaves change color, the air turns crisp and
yellow buses hit the streets.

It is with deep appreciation and admiration that I would like to send out
a special acknowledgement, and thank you to all the past World Footbag
Association touring pros.   The players listed below have helped to pioneer
our sport and they have contributed greatly to its continued prosperity.

Registration Open for 2013 IFPA World Footbag Championships!

Reposting the Good Word from the Footbag.org Announcement List:

World Footbag is an official sponsor of the 2013 World Footbag Championships being held in Montreal, Canada. We’re excited to sponsor this event another year strong! And we can’t wait to see the awesome videos that come from the Footbag  video contest too!!!

ifpa_worlds_2013

Here is the info from the Announce List:

Hello Footbaggers across the world!

Online registration is now open for the 34th Annual IFPA World Footbag
Championships in Montreal, Canada, from  July 28th until August 4th.

Registration is MANDATORY for all competitors by the deadline of  July 15th.

So please register and pay now online here:

http://www.footbag.org/registration/register?tid=1323272493

If you want to compete at Worlds this year, you MUST register online and
PAY by  July 15th, 2013.

There will be NO on-site or late registration. Whether you are a
competitor, a sideline player, a volunteer or a member of the staff, please
register and pay here today:

http://www.footbag.org/registration/register?tid=1323272493

If you’re a non-competitor, you’re still asked to pay in advance to
simplify check-in and help confirm headcounts, but you may register online
and pay when you check in to get your players’ pack.

You can pay the registration fee by PayPal or a bank transfer. But since
bank transfer fees can be high, and take a long time to be processed,
we strongly recommend PayPal (which also allows you to use credit
cards if you don’t already have a PayPal account).

Registration takes just a couple of minutes, so there is no reason not to
do it now.

If you don’t have a credit card or can’t use a bank transfer, you may ask a
friend to pay on your behalf. For PayPal, simply ask your friend to go to
your registration form, sign in to your  footbag.org  account, and then
submit the form and choose PayPal, and then sign in to their PayPal account
to complete the payment.

You can still change your registration any time you like, before the
deadline of  July 15th. This includes finding/changing partners up until the
very last day of online registration. If you have already paid and you make
a change that affects your total fee calculation, then we will either
refund or collect the difference when you check-in for the tournament in
Montreal.

If you don’t have a partner, that’s okay — go ahead and register and pay
without a partner for each event you need a partner for. Then, when
registration closes, we will send an email to each registrant giving a list
of available partners who have registered so that you can pair up.

It will be up to you to confirm your partnership with your partner, and to
update your registration form. (It will be possible to add/remove partners
for 48 hours after the deadline. But you may not make any other changes
at that point.)

Also, don’t wait to reserve your accommodation in Montreal. We’ve got great
options at the special footbag rate for you here:

World Footbag Employee Biographies: Jonno Norton, Social Media Guru

footbag_collection_jonno

Footbag Enthusiast Turned Social Media Maven

footbag_collection_jonno
Jonno Norton posing with part of his huge footbag collection.

I’m Jonno Norton, proudly reporting for duty as the new social media guy at World Footbag! You’ll be hearing from me via tweets from @WorldFootbag, on Facebook at our Fan Page,  on the World Footbag YouTube Channel as we upload new content every week, and right here on the blog posting footbag news and history for your enjoyment 🙂

I’ve been a footbag kicker since I saw my first stalls in high school. Some older kids played legit footbag, or freestyle as it’s commonly referred to, and I was enamored on my first day of high school when I saw them playing their unique style at lunch. This wasn’t like anything I had seen before, though I had been hacking for quite some time very enthusiastically for just about all of junior high and middle school up until then. I quickly befriended them, and started trying to learn my first stall. It took me all of a day to finally get it consistently.

Conveniently, I was lucky enough to grow up during the time that the internet and a PC became a household item for most families, around 2000. I searched and YouTube’d my way to videos of professional footbag players from around the world, joined the IFPA, carried a sand-filled bag everywhere I went, and even got some of my local friends to start playing with me. We learned tricks from each other and advanced our tiny segment of the sport in our corner of the world.

Soon after high school I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue whatever I may find there 🙂 This proved to be a fantastic decision, helping to blossom my career in social media marketing as well as providing the fortune of meeting my lovely wife. I did not, however, meet any local footbag players. I was busy with the hustle and bustle of the city, and would mostly just run around Lake Merritt when I got the chance and shred in a few key places on my own. I did meet some casual kickers, but nothing permanent.

During that time I was fortunate enough to work with Dan Ednie on editing the footbag manual he an Vasek Klouda  (wiki) c0-wrote together. We also did a short social media run as well, promoting the manual for sale in PDF form. We’re very close now to re-releasing the manual as a proper ebook. Stay tuned for more details about that!

The Twitter community wasn’t primed for the footbag sport at that time, with only a few key players online and some barely active community pages.  Around then I put together some community profiles which are still in use today. They are @PlayFootbag and @FootbagBot.

@PlayFootbag is mostly famous for automatically tweeting new footbag videos posted to YouTube. It’s a hub for new footbag content and updates periodically throughout the day. I usually find really cool videos from other countries posted there; it’s pretty cool to see people shredding in Chile.

@FootbagBot is a ROBOT! Not really, but it runs on an algorithm that allows it to automatically retweet any tweet with the hashtag #Footbag. It’s meant to serve as a community hub for people in the footbag community to follow in case they miss a tweet they would have wanted to see, like somebody in there area calling out to local players that isn’t in their friends list. Most notably, I’ve been running the social media efforts at Flying Clipper for the past two years as well, which has been really fun.

I’ve been so happy to be able to participate in the growth of this sport in my own unique way. I feel like social media is the place to be these days, and it’s great to help some companies and the community overall in engaging with each other through social media. I definitely can say I love my job 🙂
