Tricks of the Trade

Kenny Shults holds over 40 World titles in footbag and is considered by many as the games undisputed grand master of freestyle. His contributions and inventiveness in freestyle are illustrated in the very popular Tricks of the Trade video (available on page 45). This issue of Footbag World highlights two of Kenny's 41 tricks featured in his video.

Dragonfly

The Dragonfly combines a dexterity move with a flyer. First, set the bag like you would for a Flying Clipper. Then throw your lead leg into the air just like you would for a clipper,

except turn your hips so the outside of your leg faces up. Next, pull your heel back to bring your leg over the bag as you kick it with the inside of the other foot. Remember to keep your shoulders open to the footbag, and to turn your hips.

Flying Butterfly

The Flying Butterfly is the opposite of the Dragonfly, although it's another move that combines a dexterity move with a flyer, with the addition of a Flying Clipper. In the execution of the Dragonfly, your non-kicking leg comes from the inside out over the footbag, while the Flying Butterfly requires your non-kicking leg to come from the outside in, over the footbag. To start, set the footbag about head high.

That's your head, not Michael Jordan's. Throw your lead leg into the air like you would for a Flying Clipper, except bring it to the outside of the footbag. Bring that leg over the footbag as you bring your other foot up and complete the move with a Flying Clipper kick. Remember, as with any trick, stay over the footbag!
